David’s father did not know that his son’s genetic condition left him extremely vulnerable to developing polio from the Oral Polio Vaccine.<\/p>\n

Orenstein, who was director of the U.S. immunization program at the CDC from 1988 to 2004, recalled Friday in an interview.\u201d”<\/p>\n

As a result of his son’s injury, John Salamone fought tirelessly for the US to switch from the oral polio vaccine (live virus) to the injected (inactivated) version we use today that does not carry the risk of infecting the vaccinated individual with the vaccine strain of the disease.<\/p>\n

“\u201cJohn [Salamone]\u2019s advocacy on behalf of his son really did change U.S. immunization policy,\u201d Halsey said in an interview, \u201cand changed it toward a safer vaccine.\u201d\u201d<\/p>\n
